Beginners
|
Beginners are welcome at any session, as are students returning to martial arts after a break, although it is recommended that you contact that club's instructor in advance so they can ensure there are enough instructors to cover the lesson, and provide you with the focus you need for your first time. The first 2 beginners sessions are free, and we will work with you in a small group to learn the basics. You will be given some information at the end of the class, sign-up form, and if you wish to continue then please complete and bring back to the next lesson. We would be glad to see you - but no pressure! Where is my nearest Club? Look at our Club Locations section Can I just turn up? Please contact the instructor of your prefered class who can advise, to ensure there are enough instructors present to be able to work more with you on your first session. What is it like being a beginner in a class? Starting anything new is challenging and nerve wracking. Your instructor and assistant instructors will always be there to give you help and attention when joining our academy. Always remember that when starting you take it at your own pace, and you will soon be able to keep up with the others. Is there a Code of Conduct? Yes there is. Click to read the I.S.M.A.A. Code of Conduct Will I get hurt? Lots of people think that karate/martial arts is about hurting, being hurt and being thrown around. Karate/Martial Arts is a physical art, but we train on a controlled, light contact basis and as a beginner your training will not involve a lot of physical contact. Full safety protection is provided for a small deposit which is fully refundable when and if you leave ISMAA. Do I have to wait for a new term to start or can I train straight away? You can start straight away. What if I have done karate/martial arts before? This is not a problem. Just let us know your background and we will advise you on the most suitable class. How often are gradings? Gradings are 3 times per year. Private gradings are available on request. How will I know if I'm ready to grade? Your instructor will be assessing you throughout your training and will advise you if you should grade or not. Do I have to grade? Gradings are not compulsory, but for younger children it helps give a confidence boost when they pass their grade and receive a belt and quality certificate. How often should I be training? Guidelines to get the most out of your training are: Beginners to Yellow belt 1 session per week. Orange belt to Blue belt. 2 sessions per week. Purple belt and above 2-3 sessions per week + advanced courses. What if I have a friend who wants to join? Just give us a call to let us know. Where can I buy the equipment? All instructors can get the equipment for you. Please ask an instructor for details, or see our Equipment section. What is the difference between Karate styles? All styles of Karate practice blocking, striking and kicking, but with different emphasis on range, speed and direction of techniques. We typically concentrate on Wado-Ryu. Click here for the history of Wado-Ryu. What shall I wear? Please come wearing light tracksuit bottoms/t-shirt. |
